About the Z-500
The Z-500 is an adaptor board designed to allow the use of Zorro-II cards with an Amiga 500. To do this, it simply makes use of the A500's sidecar connector, which contains almost all the signals required by Zorro. A passthrough connector allows sidecar peripherals to still be used with the Zorro card, provided it plays nice with Autoconfig (which isn't necessarily the case since it's reasonable for a sidecar-style device to assume it's the only device connected).
